1,620 new cases have been confirmed this evening, with 12 additional deaths reported. There are now 490 patients with Covid-19 in hospital, almost double the number of Christmas Eve patients (253) just one week ago.
In a sign that contact tracing systems are under strain, the HSE has now stated that close contacts of confirmed Covid cases will not be required to undergo testing.
However, they MUST restrict movements for 14 days. In response to the high prevalence of COVID-19 now circulating in our community, the HSE is asking everyone in Ireland to stay at home, and to effectively act like they have the virus. This is in response to the very high rates of positive tests seen over recent days, and the widespread increase in infections in our communities nationwide.
"This step is being taken to ensure that those who are symptomatic are prioritised and receive a test as quickly as possible," a press release from the HSE states.
When the HSE says public health services are under threat due to the third wave, this is what they mean.

According to the HSE’s Chief Clinical Officer, Dr Colm Henry:
"The pressure on our public health system, including testing and tracing services is NOT SUSTAINABLE. A collective response by every individual, across every county, to follow the public health advice is essential."
"We are asking all close contacts to restrict their movements, this is the strongest defence we have against the spread of this virus," Henry added.
"If you show any symptoms please call your GP or GP Out of Hours service immediately and they will refer you for a test if required. We know that GPs and GP Out of Hours services are very busy, and we ask for everyone’s patience as we all work through this challenging time. We are asking that the public support this measure fully and follow all public health advice so that we can all keep our friends and family safe."
Professor Philip Nolan projects "significant" further increases in cases/hospitalisations in days ahead.
"We are likely to see over 700-1000 people in hospital with Covid-19 in early New Year."
Prof Philip Nolan says current daily case numbers are an UNDER-estimate.

People who received notification by SMS that they are a close contact, should follow the existing public health guidance and restrict their movements for 14 days. Should they become symptomatic they should call their GP or GP Out of Hours service and arrange a test.
This temporary measure is being implemented in consultation with GPs, to ensure those who are symptomatic are tested as quickly as possible and that we can continue to try to reduce the spread of the virus.
In positive news, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has confirmed that 20,000 vaccinations will take place next week.
"HSE has just confirmed to me that the plan for next week is now to vaccinate 20,000 people. This includes nursing homes & healthcare workers in all 7 hospital groups," the Minister tweeted.
"This week's schedule includes vaccinations right through the weekend. Huge credit to all involved."
