COVID-19: Cabinet implements new restrictions on public gatherings based on NPHET recommendations
The Department of Health reported 200 new cases in Ireland on Saturday.
The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) released recommendations on further Coronavirus restrictions, as case numbers have climbed to a figure not recorded since May. Today, the Cabinet conducted a three hour long meeting to decide which restrictions should be introduced.
Strict limits on public gatherings are being introduced, with outdoor events now to be limited to 15 people. It was previously a 200 person limit.
New restrictions are to remain in place until September 13th at the earliest. Indoor events will be limited to six people (the previous limit was 50), except for businesses like shops and restaurants, which will be subject to separate rules. Weddings are also subject to different rules, and will still be able to go ahead with 50 people.
These restrictions, agreed on by the Cabinet, will result in matches and all sporting events taking place behind closed doors, without spectators.
Gardaí will be given new authority to enforce restrictions around social gatherings, particularly in restaurants or pubs serving food, as well as in private homes.
Additionally, people will be advised to work from home and to avoid using public transport unless absolutely necessary.
According to RTÉ's Aisling Kelly, the government is working on a new road map for the next six to nine months.
A source said the Government is working on a new road map for the next six to nine months and it's hoped it will be completed in September.
