The Hot Press guide to the best beers, spirits, bars and artisanal food.
Located on High Street and Upper Denmark Street, the beloved Mother Macs pub is one of Limerick’s most iconic buildings. In recent times, it has expanded to offer rotational craft taps, specials and a large selection of bottled beers. They also feature guest taps, with Kinnegar Brewing from Donegal taking them over on March 14 as part of the Limerick Craft Beer Trail.
In addition, Mother Macs boasts an impressive selection of whiskeys, including the special release Powers Whiskey 1817, and visitors are encouraged to enquire about the Whiskey Of The Month offers. Remaining respectful of its roots, Mother Macs has the distinction of being one of only a small handful of Limerick bars without a TV. Entertainment comes in the form of the comedy club, Shamozzle, which takes place two Fridays out of every month.
The current owners believe in highlighting the extraordinary talents of local artists, with the pub’s distinctive signage being the work of internationally renowned sign writer Tom Collins. It all makes for a brilliantly atmospheric pub that’s a huge local favourite – and an essential stop-off for visitors to the Treaty city.
