I live in London now, and while it’s exponentially bigger and more diverse in terms of the amount of different cultures and food options, I think the overall quality in Ireland is better, especially in terms of produce. When it comes to meat and dairy in particular, I’m Ireland all the way.
Whenever I’m home in Wicklow, I’d usually go somewhere in the mountains for a walk. After spending the day with the wind and cold brushing up against me, one of my favourites is The Roundwood Inn. It’s a whole experience. They’ve got a fire lit and it’s so cosy and warm. They do this chicken and chips in a basket - when you’re hungry it’s really comforting. Their rollmops as a starter are also very yummy and they have some of the best Guinness I’ve ever had.

Wicklow is famous for being the Garden County with all its natural scenery. I’ve been going to Avoca since I was a kid. When I was in school in Dublin, my mom would always stop off at the one in Kilmacanouge on the way home. I have really nice childhood memories there, the garden is just gorgeous. The chicken and broccoli bake is my favourite, with some salads, of course.

I grew up in Wicklow town, and for coffee there’s the aptly named The Coffee Shop. I used to go there with my dad all the time and it’s the sweetest place ever, it’s very local and cute. It’s also been there for years, so they must be doing something right. Then for something a little bit more fancy, there’s Hunters.
Then for something a little bit more fancy, there’s Hunters. It’s a place we used to go for celebrations when I was growing up. It’s quite old school, it feels like you’re stepping into the past. It’s really out of the way too, you couldn’t just stumble across it, which I think makes it quite nice.
The Bridge Tavern is another great spot if you want a little bit of a scenic view. It’s right by the river, and it’s not far from the beach too if you want to walk along the Murrough. Drink-wise you can’t go wrong with Ta Se’s, it’s a UNESCO heritage pub in Wicklow Town and a real family spot.
