Lookin' rather mellow, with all these shades of yellow - this Spring's colour has been set.
As we’ve previously detailed on these pages, luscious lilac is one of the hues of the year. The other colour of Spring 2018, meanwhile, is also intricately connected to our beloved purple: yellow. This complementary colour is very much on-trend this season, bouncing into our lives and wardrobes in multiple manifestations. These range from pop-art bursts of zesty lemon to splashes of ’70s-style soft mustards. Though bright, this colour is surprisingly versatile, suiting both understated and outrageous fashionistas.
Yellow has been dominating the catwalks in various guises, all of which are irresistibly vibrant. Of course, springtime yellow inspires visions of fresh, flouncy femininity, and many designers played with the season’s sense of lightness and renewed energy. Sies Marjan’s airy chiffon dresses came in Post-It yellow shades, embracing shirt-dress silhouettes that make office wear feel fashion-forward.
Meanwhile, the psychedelic greenhouse of Christian Siriano’s collection sprouted sunflower yellow flounce gowns paired with moto jackets, as well as body-skimming maxi dresses that would brighten up any sunset.
Carolina Herrera also took the spring garden theme seriously, where striking yellow gowns brightened up the Museum of Modern Art’s outdoor sculpture garden like the walking, talking blooms from Alice In Wonderland. And Marc Jacobs played with breezy and dramatic flourishes, pairing flower-embellished lemon hued gowns with black opera-length gloves and gothic headpieces.
But designers also played with more casual styles. Greta Constantine’s collection featured yellow mini-dresses under midnight blue cropped jackets, for an eye-grabbing day-to-night ensemble, while R13 went for edgy combinations of yellow pleather skirts and multi-coloured graphic tops. Zadig Voltare paired sheer cream and lemon shirts under black blazers for a soft yet edgy look, while Tibi teamed yellow belts and accessories with tweed and white ensembles, for a fresh take on traditional fabrics.
Nancy Tran’s collection was the most bright and breezy of them all, as her short, adorable gowns were all bright yellow, but featured beautiful floral designs. And Versace went edgier, highlighting the colour with black patterns and leather belts.

To inject some sunshine into your life, you can start small with yellow earrings or shoes, but don’t be afraid to go big and bright! Remember that brighter shades of yellow suit olive skin tones, with sorbet and pastel hues better for fairer complexions. Black and yellow striped pieces can be paired with black separates, which is an accessible way to introduce the colour into your wardrobe.
Yellow and white tops are also adorable when paired with jeans and heels, but don’t be afraid of patterns. Floral prints on yellow backdrops are all the rage this season, and make for gorgeous day and occasion wear. If you have any spring weddings, race days or family events coming up in the next couple of months, yellow is the colour.
