It's spring, it's been a hard year, and it's time for some sunny optimism.
Yellow is now worth its weight in gold, with A-listers rocking the hue on the red carpet. Think Rihanna’s incredible imperial yellow, fur-trimmed train at the Met Gala, Cate Blanchett in Valentino, and Rosamund Pike in Alexander McQueen – it’s the colour of goddesses, and it’s time for you to rule.
Yellow certainly dominated the runways in Milan from top to toe this season, in every hue, style and era. The versatility of this hue disproves the commonly held belief that the bright colour can’t be worn by Irish women – we know we’re not a natural match with sunshine, but trust me, there’s an option out there for everyone. From fizzy sherbert to mustard to pastel ’50s lemon, there’s a shade of sun to suit you, no matter what your skintone or style.
Max Mara went for slick athleisure with visors and leather trench coats in yellow tones, all the way down to sock booties and suspiciously Croc-like clogs. And while virtually every shade popped up somewhere – marigold at Gucci, egg yolk at Pucci, near-neon at Ferragamo – the most popular (and wearable) were the lemony hues. Byblos went for gentle sherbert florals, while Emilio Pucci went for dramatic long coats and fringed bags in citrus colours. There were also some Havana summer vibes, as floral prints and ruffles appeared on Dolce and Gabbana, while Bottega Veneta opted for matte yellow tones on classic shirt-dresses.
If you love to rock a vintage vibe, yellow can be worked into your favourite fashion era easily. If you love the A-line full skirts of the ’50s, look for white and yellow stripes that will make you look like Betty Draper hosting a summer party. If you’re a ’70s gal, look out for flared jumpsuits and high-waisted trousers in mustard hues, to complement your avocado-themed kitchen décor. And if you’re bringing back the ’90s grunge, team a yellow floral slip dress over a plain white tee, throw on a choker and some chunky sunshine platforms, and you’re ready to bring some glamorous gloom to the spring!
