The 2014 Golden Globe Awards, which honour the best in film and television in the last year, took place last night, January 12, at the Beverly Hills hotel, Los Angeles. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co-hosted the show for the second time this year.
Just hours before the Golden Globes ceremony last night, the red carpet was drenched by a malfunctioning sprinkler nearby. As E! host Ryan Seacrest reported from the site, "This could be bad for long gowns". Thankfully, the issue was mostly resolved before those long gowns and the ladies who wore them started their trips down the carpet...
Beauty at the Golden Globes this year was very understated. Almost all of the ladies went for simple up-dos or wore their hair down in natural looking slight waves. Most had equally simple makeup; with some choosing a bright lipstick to complement their outfits, and a few opting for a smokey eye.
Nude/cream tones with a goldish hue were abundant. The best were seen on the likes of Naomi Watts, who wore a fully sequined Tom Ford number and 'Best Actress In A TV series' nominee for New Girl Zooey Deschanel, looking a little less twee than her character in the show in what looked like a two-piece Oscar de la Renta; shinier than but not dissimilar to Emilia Wickstead's Spring 2014 collection.
Star of nominated 'Best TV Series, Musical Or Comedy' Parks And Recreation, Rashida Jones wore a Fausto Puglisi dress, which played on this nude/gold trend with the gold limited to palm tree shapes on an otherwise plain cream dress.
Similarly, pregnant Drew Barrymore went for two trends in one, in a nude dress with red and blood-orange flowers by Monique Lhullier.
Block coloured dresses, mainly in red based tones, were hugely popular. Emma Watson wore blood-orange Dior. Taylor Swift opted for a sweet dark coral and black gown by Carolina Herrera. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, nominated for both 'Best Supporting Actress In A Motion Picture, Musical Or Comedy' for Enough Said and 'Best Actress In A TV Series, Musical Or Comedy' for Veep wore a simple reddish-orange Narcisco Rodriguez halter-neck. Winner of 'Best Actress In A Motion Picture, Musical Or Comedy' for American Hustle, Amy Adams looked beautiful in a flowing red Valentino dress. Star of 'Best Motion Picture, Drama' winner 12 Years A Slave, Lupita Nyong’o, looked incredible for her first Golden Globes appearance in a caped, slightly orange-toned red Ralph Lauren dress.
Jennifer Lawrence, winner of 'Best Supporting Actress In A Motion Picture, Musical Or Comedy' for American Hustle went for something unique on this particular red carpet. Her trademark Christian Dior gown this time was monochrome; mainly white with black details.
Where monochrome was a huge trend last awards season, many stars this year opted instead for plain black. With clean, innovative cuts and in contrast to the red carpet and the bold colours of the other dresses they did not look so plain after all.
Modern Family star Sofia Vergara, nominated for 'Best Supporting Actress In A Series, Miniseries Or TV Movie', looked stunning as always in Zac Posen, completing her look with a huge, on-trend mint/turquoise necklace.
Emma Roberts stood out in a Lanvin fishtail-style dress, again with large mint/turquoise accessories.
E!'s Fashion Police host Kelly Osbourne wore a cap-sleeved Escada dress with gold emblazoned shoulders, a v-neck and a slit up to just above the knee. This cut was just conservative enough to keep her looking as classy and stylish as a fashion critic should be, in spite of her lilac hair.
Jessica Chastain wore the most understated of all the black styles this year, in Givenchy, with all of the colour in the look coming from her red hair and red nails.
Winner of 'Best Actress In A Motion Picture, Drama' for Blue Jasmine, Cate Blanchett looked wonderful, working both nude and black in a beautiful high-neck, low-back, lace Armani Prive dress.
The hosts looked wonderful together, in perfectly complementing outfits. Former Saturday Night Live player and winner of the 2014 Golden Globe for 'Best Actress In A TV Series, Musical Or Comedy' for Parks And Recreation, Amy Poehler stuck to the black trend for the red carpet, stunning in an interestingly cut yet understated Stella McCartney dress. Her co-host and long-time best friend Tina Fey, creator and star of Mean Girls and 30 Rock, managed to match and contrast with both Amy's dress and the red carpet in a black and reddish-pink dress from Carolina Herrera.
It was nice to see some television stars depart from this season's trends and go for other bold colours. Parks And Recreation star Aubrey Plaza looked happier and a little more girly than usual in a two-toned purple and baby-pink Oscar de la Renta gown. The lifted hem at the front showed off her perfectly matched shoes. Star of Masters Of Sex Caitlin Fitzgerald wore a pretty, understated baby blue Emilia Wickstead gown and Girls creator and star Lena Dunham wore a canary yellow gown by Zac Posen.
Helen Mirren also decided to stand out from the crowd, looking fabulous in a long-sleeved, high-necked mint green dress by Jenny Packham.
For the men, classic tuxes were highly popular. The majority of the male stars in attendance, including 'Best Actor In A Motion Picture, Drama' nominee for 12 Years A Slave Michael Fassbender wore crisp, simple, wide-lapelled black tuxes with white shirts and black bow ties.
The few exceptions included 30 Seconds To Mars drummer Shannon Leto who attended the ceremony with brother Jared in a suit with narrow lapels edged in white and a black tie showing from under his small shirt collar. Jared Leto was the winner of 'Best Supporting Actor In A Motion Picture, Drama, Musical Or Comedy' for Dallas Buyers Club. Jared's co-star Matthew McConaughey was a 'Best Actor In A Motion Picture, Drama’ winner and was also dressed rather unconventionally. His Dolce & Gabbana tux was classically tailored, but the jacket was in a dark green velvet. Kevin Spacey and Chris Hemsworth also chose velvet tuxes, in black and blue respectively.
The members of U2, whose ‘Ordinary Love’ from Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom won 'Best Original Song From A Motion Picture', went for suits untypical of most red carpet A-Listers, but typical of rock stars and seemingly the Irish in general, as Colin Farrell did the same, with a shiny modern tux.
Watch the Golden Globes tonight at 9pm on RTÉ Two.
