...and trousers, shirts and dresses! Whether you’re into shimmer, sequin or shine, this season, a touch of metal will add that vital extra dimension to your look.
Metal is back! That was the word from the catwalks, as the leading designers gave fashionistas a look at their wares for the upcoming autumn/winter season.
Ulyana Sergeenko was all about the power-femme. Filled with shimmering pastel metallics, the designer’s new collection featured full-length gowns in shining pinks, offset with gold medieval-style headpieces, a kind of Joan of Arc meets Space Barbie look. J.Mendel also showcased formal gowns, but stuck to traditional bronze hues and modern silhouettes, with pleated skirts and cut-outs. Ellie Saab went for sequins and embellishments on her golden gowns, which were accessorised with dramatic shoulder pieces and metallic clutch bags. Jean-Paul Gaultier played with clashing fabrics, combining sheer blouses with shining silver tuxedo accents. Meanwhile, Pierre Cardin was more traditional, his all-over sequins and accent bows unapologetically leaning towards Christmas festivities.
Some designers played with bold pops of colour: shining royal blues and dramatic red sequins. But silver was the clear space-age disco favourite. Phillipp Plein was all about the silver-slicked dresses, while Iceberg combined metallic pants with crisp white shirts.
While it’s a winner for party dresses and festival-ready jumpsuits, the metallic trend is actually hugely versatile. Long, metallic, slip-style dresses layered over white tees embrace the ‘90s grunge look that’s huge right now. Or you can add some flair to your office-wear by looking for a metallic pencil skirt. If that feels too bold for the work-place, pair the skirt with a simple cami top for a night out, and bling out your workwear with some metallic heels instead.

If you want a more casual look, golden bomber jackets look perfect teamed with skinny jeans and some heels, while a metallic backpack will make any college outfit look high-fashion and edgy. Add some statement gold boots to a simple outfit for a shot of interest, while a sequined clutch looks amazing and luxurious paired with skinny jeans and a sophisticated blazer.
For a more eccentric look with a softer vibe, team longer silver or sequined skirts with woollen jumpers or fine-knit, long-sleeved tops. This use of seemingly clashing fabrics is a favourite among haute couture designers, and is effortlessly chic. Team with sneakers for a fun, casual feel, or muted metallic heels for an evening ensemble.
The bottom line: stock up on metallics this winter – and your wardrobe will be worth its weight in gold.
