Not long ago, crowds in soccer video games looked like 2D cut-outs made from spit and cardboard. In FIFA 19, they bristle with individual personalities, chanting anthems while you steer strikers towards the opponent’s net. Despite such graphical leaps, some players still live in uncanny valley: strange automations who float like Buddhist monks after scoring goals.
FIFA’s biggest selling point is its licensing and there’s a list of over 700 playable teams (including Ireland’s SSE Airtricity league) in the dressing rooms. The game kicks off with an introduction to this year’s endorsement: UEFA Champions League. FIFA 19 sees the final chapter of The Journey, the story of a footballer’s progression from UK school pitches to LA penthouses. Sport is all about high-stakes drama and the start of this story, a 1970 league match featuring the hero’s grandpa, is gripping stuff. Hans Zimmer – iconic composer and Hollywood royalty – crafted the score.
