The O’Donovan brothers’ humorous comments about their brilliant silver medal achievement at the Rio Games has been voted as the most memorable Irish sporting moment of 2016.
The Cork brothers' hilarious post-game comments - described by many as simply "pure Cork" - made to RTÉ Sport about “steak and spuds” and their tactics of “pull like a dog” won over the nation and deserved the top spot, according to a national survey.
Man of the moment, Conor McGregor’s defeat of Eddie Alvavez came second in the survey. The Crumlin fighter was also named 'Ireland’s Most Admired Sports Star of 2016'.
While for the third year in a row, the Irish rugby team was named ‘Team of the Year’ after their historical first victory over the All Blacks, along with triumphs over Australia and South Africa all within a calendar year.
The national survey, which was conducted by PSG Sport and Sponsorship Sentiment, also found that soccer remains the most popular sport with 21% of those questioned, followed closely by GAA at 17% and rugby with 5%.
The survey also asked fans what the were most looking forward to viewing in 2017 and the Six Nations came out on top with 26%, followed by GAA Championship (19%), FIFA World Cup Qualifiers (18%) and the Lions tour to New Zealand (6%).
