Stuart Clark reports on the reopening of Ireland’s distillery visitor experiences and all the other latest whiskey and gin goings-on from around the country.
Powerscourt Distillery has truly made a name for itself, having secured the talents of Master Distiller Noel Sweeney - one of only two Irish Master Distillers ever to have been inducted into the World Whiskey Hall of Fame. Backdropped by the breathtakingly beautiful Wicklow Hills and the Great Sugarloaf Mountain, Powerscourt Distillery is found in one of Ireland’s most picturesque locations.
The initial concept for development of a distillery on Powerscourt Estate was driven by Gerry Ginty, a local who grew up in Enniskerry village. He moved back to Ireland from the UK in January 2014, with a plan to build a traditional Pot Still Irish whiskey distillery, embodying the heritage and style of Powerscourt Estate. The distillery plant was then commissioned by Sweeney and equipment experts Forsyths.
The Old Mill House, dating back to the 1730s, was faithfully restored and now accommodates a state-of-the-art production plant, an immersive Visitor Centre and on-site warehousing. Part of the fabric of the Powerscourt Estate, the water-powered Mill House is complete with the original turbine built by Craig and Sons in Belfast still intact. Powerscourt Distillery are now proudly introducing the public to the first release of their Estate Series, named after the Mill House itself.
The ‘Mill House’ Limited Edition Single Grain Amarone Finish by Fercullen Irish Whiskey is one-of-a-kind, packed with history and flavour. The Amarone finish is a marriage of single grain whiskeys produced in 2010, 2011 and 2012 by Noel Sweeney, matured in ex-bourbon barrels, before finishing in premium Italian Amarone casks for 18 months to allow the whiskey to reach an optimum mellow combination of grain, bourbon, oak and Amarone. Non chill filtered with natural colour and bottled at 46%, this Single Grain Irish whiskey is set to excite with its depth of flavour and complexity of taste.
