‘Shape the Future’ provides a chance to see new work by 20 of Ireland’s most exciting and creative designer-makers, who have been awarded Design & Craft Council of Ireland’s Future Makers prizes and development funding over the past seven years.
The National College of Art and Design (NCAD) will host the opening night of the ‘Shape the Future’ exhibition at the NCAD Gallery, 100 Thomas Street, on Friday, 3rd March, 6.00pm - 8.00pm. The exhibition will run in the NCAD Gallery from 3 March until 20 March.
The designers being showcased work across the areas of Fashion, Jewellery, Accessories, Textiles, Furniture, Product Design, Glass, Ceramics and Leather.
Speaking ahead of the launch, the curator of the exhibition, Angela O'Kelly, NCAD Head of Design for Body and Environment, said: “Irish design and craft is having a moment. Irish designer-makers are growing with confidence, adapting traditional techniques and combining them with new materials and processes to create unique works.
“The premise of the exhibition is how craft and design shape our cultural identity and how culture has influenced the work of the participating makers. ‘Shape the Future’ will showcase works by twenty of Ireland’s most dynamic designer-makers who have been supported through the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland’s Future Makers Awards.
"The designers were invited to make new works inspired by their cultural surroundings – from fashion to furniture and product design to ceramics, there is something for all to enjoy and be inspired by at the ‘Shape the Future’ exhibition.”
The work of the following designer-makers will be featured: Cillian Ó'Súilleabháin; Gail Mahon; Jackie Maurer; Jaki Coffey; Jennifer Slattery; Karen Donnellan; Kate Murtagh; Sheridan; Kate O'Kelly; Lisa Ryder; Lorna Boyle; Natalie B Coleman; Owen Quinlan; Pierce Healy; Print Block; Sam Hamilton; Síofra Caherty; Snug; Superfolk; Suzanne Rogers; and| Úna Burke.
The exhibition is organised as part of the marking of Ireland 2016 under the Cultural Expression strand. ‘Shape the Future’ is a touring exhibition and was first shown at the National Craft Gallery, Kilkenny.
