Roe McDermott explores the sartorial rise of the It Sweater, and looks at how to elevate your humble pull-over into a statement piece worthy of high fashion.
No longer the safe, reliable staple of mothers and Aran lovers, this season the modest jumper has become a veritable star of the fashion world. Yes, the humble pull-over has been elevated to the dizzying heights of catwalk fashion.
Embodying a slouchy sophistication, a casual confidence, a knowing “Oh, this old thing?” nonchalance, the unassuming jumper has the ability to transform an outfit, either adding a loud, shouty logo and attitude to a simple ensemble or bringing an understated, deliberately dressed-down elegance to embellished eveningwear.
Whether you’re a fan of Christopher Kane’s camo wear, Dries Van Noten’s fluffy grunge, Jil Saunder’s gold-foiled offerings or Proenza Schouler’s sombre tops, the key to this season’s must-have item is bucking tradition and transforming the ordinary into something utterly unexpected.
Givenchy’s designer Riccardo Tisci has been steadfastly leading the way for the It-sweater trend, replacing last year’s pansy mohair and his Rottweiler-emblazoned jumpers with this winter’s must-have Bambi sweatshirt. Imbuing a whimsical Disney character with both a sardonic and sophisticated edge by teaming the print with partially transparent, embellished skirts and edgy leather boots, curator of cool Tisci ensured that Givenchy shops were flooded with requests for this sartorial trip down nostalgia lane. But if you don’t have the $1,375 to spend on Givenchy’s take, fear not – Penneys, of all places, is doing a pretty sweet version for only €12. It can be given a daring edge by teaming it with a transparent lace pencil skirt, or a leather mini for an ironic rock chick vibe.
This exercise in contrasts is what elevates jumpers into statement pieces, and was beautifully illustrated by Proenza Schouler on the catwalks, as the New York brand teamed simple dark sweaters with elaborate, multi-coloured feathered skirts. Meanwhile, Kenzo’s coterie of hipster-lite models wore their boldly graphic sweatshirts with elaborate jacquard minis, combining modern punch with old-fashioned opulence.
To transport this look from the catwalk to the brisk walk to work, be sure to combine contrasting and conflicting elements. Metallic jumpers can be paired with intricate autumnal designs, while cutesy cartoon graphics can be given a tough glamour by teaming them with dramatic maxi skirts in leather or sequins. Likewise, chunky knit jumpers can be made more delicate with silk slip skirts. Finally, edgy cropped jumpers with camouflage prints or bold graphics can be given a sense of femme sophistication when worn with high-waisted, figure-hugging skirts in simple silhouettes - and a high slit, if you want to bring some urban sexuality to your streetwear sweaters.
As ever, accessories can also help to morph simple pieces into an outfit worthy of high-fashion. With this textured, tactile trend, the key is to look for dramatic and edgy jewellery. Armoured statement cuffs will play beautifully against the soft comfort of jumpers, while extravagant jewels will add a sense of luxury. Keeping cosy has never been this cool.
