With the festive season upon us, it’s time to get out those glad rags and bring some edgy, urban and unapologetically extravagant glamour to your winter wardrobe. Roe McDermott tells you what must-have fashion items to add to your Dear Santa letter
This Christmas, formal wear evokes some of the most dramatic trends of the year: stunning sequins, fabulous feathers, elaborate embellishment and fierce furs. Combining textures and layers of ornate accessories, the look is edgy opulence.
Romantic and dreamy, feathers were all over the autumn/winter catwalks. We were seduced by the variety, from baby’s-breath maribou and dainty ostrich fronds to shimmering jewel-toned peacock. Proenza Schouler teamed feathered skirts with simple sweaters for a striking high-low effect. Meanwhile, up-andcoming Turkish label Hakaan used feather accents and jackets to embellish their simple, tailored pieces and lend some extravagance to their silk and leather looks.
Short-feathered capes are also popular, embodying the Amazonian armoured trend that is dominating the accessories shelves. Feathered shoulder pieces and metallic harnesses add a wonderfully edgy and eccentric highlight to even the simplest outfits of skinny jeans and tank tops. For a truly haute couture look mix and match textures by teaming harnesses and feathered capes with sequined skirts and fur jackets. The key to this indulgent trend is layering – feel free to pile on the dramatic accessories, such as head-pieces and statement necklaces. Unique adornments such as feathered ear cuffs or jewelled headdresses will ensure your look is utterly unique, and lend some inspired eccentricity to your ensemble.
Of course sequins are always huge during party season, and can be elevated into an eye-catching ensemble by teaming with different textures. The Great Gatsby inspired 1920s trend was huge at the beginning of the year, and can be easily evoked by teaming fringed tops and drop waists with your stunning sequins.
The old worldly opulence of Anna Karenina also dominated the catwalks, with jacquard prints, gold foil and fur coats all bringing an undeniable sense of drama to winter fashion. For a sensual take on the trend, look for lace-trimmed silk pieces and layer them under kimonos and fur coats, for a seductive underwear-asouterwear look.
