The bomber jacket has recently taken over the fashion world, sported by everyone from Kanye to David Beckham. No longer confined to its military roots, it’s been reworked, edged out and femmed up, and the results are glorious. This season the bomber jacket is less about the classic silhouette and more about the details. Look for embroidery, sequins, and interesting textiles and colours. Classic black and military green bombers will never go out of style, but don’t be afraid to go bold with pink satin, houndstooth prints, jacquard or glittering sequins.

One surprising return to fashion grace is the humble puffer jacket, rescued from the attic of couture cast-offs, and returned to its former ’90s glory – with a chic twist. The puffer has run the gamut of fashion favour, but behold, fashion designers and pop stars have brought the puffer back into the catwalks. Raf Simons’ Fall collection featured shiny metallics, while Ella Boucht’s oversized baby-pink velvet puffer got the ultimate seal of approval: being worn by Rihanna.

If you’re looking for a more formal, polished style, you can never go wrong with a classic military coat. Unlike previous iterations of this trend that seemed plucked direct from the army surplus store, this season’s coats are inspired by 18th century Britain and France. Strong and sharp, these coats are not only tailored to a point, but they’re also beautifully embellished with epaulettes, brass buttons, rope trim and even some crystal bling. The military coat can be paired with literally anything. Dolce and Gabbana teamed their bejeweled jackets with silk track pants, while Christopher Bailey layered his over a glittery party dress, so go nuts mixing and matching trends.

Capes are also back in this winter, both full-length and mini capelets – and for those days when you need just a dash of drama, the latter should do the trick. A Detcher added capelet details to cardigans and jumpers, while MSGM was all about short capes with cowl necks and hoods. Burberry, meanwhile, combined two trends in one, and featured military capes in their collection.

In the market for a raincoat that’s equal parts chic and functional? The patent leather (or pleather) trench coat is here to save you. Many designers featured the shiny material on their runways, with Proenza Schouler adding fur-trims to their designs, while Beaufille and Philosphy di Lorenzo Serafina played with bold hues, like fire-engine red and grape purple. Dior and Simon Miller kept the palette more classic with black, but added statement cuffs and oversize lapels to elevate this classic shape into high fashion. Look for a slightly matte finish to make your trench look more expensive, and get ready to feel very confident about spilling things – you can just wipe it down and you’ll still look like perfection!
