With Christmas just around the corner, Roe McDermott provides some tips on achieving a stylish festive look.
The Christmas season is fast approaching, which means the onset of sensible fabrics and dodgy yuletide jumpers. Thankfully, the catwalks have catered for our need to be cosy, and high-low fashion clashes are ready to pull knitwear into the realm of haute couture!
Tony Burch’s latest catwalks were all about seasonal prints and fabrics, as the designer showcased sumptuously cosy knits along with beautifully refined embellishments. Fitted knit jumpers with beautiful sequins and gorgeous frills were paired with flirty skirts and romantic Parisian socks, for a look that was fun and feminine – but still weather-appropriate. Cutesy patterns were combined with sophisticated pencil skirts and warm overcoats for a look that combines contrasting fashions, resulting in a unique and quietly glamorous ensemble.
This mash-up of fabrics can also be reversed, with rich, jewel-toned pattern tops worn under wool cardigans, hats and scarves. Pay attention to your silhouette, teaming oversized knit sweaters with short skirts and embellished boots. Or skinny leather jeans can be mixed with a cute seasonal jumper, evoking the edgy style of Balmain. Meanwhile, Prabal Gurung combined asymmetrically hemmed maxi skirts with knitted throws for a worldly traveller look.
Even your plain old knits can be made festive when teamed with the right accessories, so look for bold necklaces and show-stopping purses. Oversized jumpers and cardigans can be nipped in with broken belts, and pair woollen socks with sequined boots for a festive and cosy combo. Hats with netting add an irreverent interpretation of formal wear, while gloves with studs and sequins add a bit of bling to your outerwear.
Who knew that your Grandmother’s presents of Christmas jumpers could be so chic? Wear that emblazoned reindeer with pride, and enjoy the holidays in style.
