This winter, send your wardrobe into a winter wonderland of femininity, soft shades and luxurious fabrics. We show you how to find the middle-ground between Sugarplum Fairy and Romanov Royalty.
With the winter chill setting in, designers are looking forward to icy landscapes, delicate snowflakes and ice-dusted fairytales to inspire their collections.
With a palette filled with cool hues and delicate pastels, luxurious furs and intricate lace, the trend is all about the sparkling splendour of icicles (though you obviously need to keep warm also). The origins of the look are in charming stories like The Nutcracker as well as the luxury of historical families like the Romanovs – which means lightly coloured furs, stoles, muffs and hats are all in season. Christopher Kane filled his catwalks with cream coloured fur jackets for unapologetically sumptuous winter glamour and Tom Ford and Paul Smith used colour to inject modernity into their Russian-inspired ensembles.
To keep your style delicate and classic, seek out white and cream faux-fur coats and hats. If you want to bring edge to your ensemble, inject pinks and purples into your palette.
While fur instantly injects old-school chic, a modern take on sparkle is provided by cooler sheen of metallics. Tarnished silver and bronze hues are set to be huge this winter, evoking a cold modernity and hint of luxury.
The easiest way to wear this trend is with metallic skirts, softened by wool or cashmere. Topshop and Vivienne Westwood both showcased fantastic leather skirts in their collections, with metallic hues centre stage.
Keep the silhouette flirtatious and floaty.
No fabric speaks to the intricacy of snowflakes and ice flowers like lace, which is set to make a glorious return. Keep the finish classic with cream and white hues that subtly show the material’s patterns. And team pencil skirts with hardier pieces such as wool coats for a ladylike outfit that will come across light and beautiful even as you keep out the winter chill.
For accessories, avoid the clichés of diamonds and go for the more subtle and elegant combination of gold and pearls.
The unique blend still feels wintery and sophisticated. It has the old-worldly charm of Russian royalty and will complement your furs perfectly. Wrap yourself in glamour!
