Dubliner Nicky Campbell became interested in fashion aged 14, when he travelled to London with his mother and was inspired by the city’s cornucopia of high and high-street fashion. After studying fashion in Copenhagen and learning the basics of design and garment production, Campbell was hooked – and Sparkle Mode was born.
Combining great street style with bold, flirty beachwear, the brand emphasises comfort as well as fantastic design. Campbell has always appreciated sports lux designs, as well as haute couture. “I love Azzedine Allia for his body contoured garments,” the designer explains, “Vivienne Westwood for her brave designs that pay off and knock one's socks off, and Stella McCartney for her sportswear tie-up with Adidas. I also respect John and Simone Rocha a great deal.”
Explaining the inspiration behind his glamourous, sporty beachwear, Campbell explains that the “styles that inspire me are sporty with a fun element that flatter and are super comfortable. I like '50s pin-up retro styles, tropical style and brilliant colours, which I soaked up when I lived in Mauritius for quite a while recently. We have tropical floral beach dresses and white super cool cottons to really accentuate the Sparkle Mode swimwear brand.”
But Sparkle Mode’s designs don’t just boast funky prints and flattering styles – they’re also health-conscious.
“My new collection is glamorous and sporty, with fun written all over it. And it uses entirely UV 50 sun protection fabrics that block the sun and protect the wearer,” Campbell explains. “Sun can be incredibly damaging to the skin and our swimwear addresses this serious problem.”
Campbell is currently busy working on the website sparklemode.com, and has opened a Sparkle Mode store at 22 Drury Street, Dublin 2 which sells his beachwear brand and other international designers. The store has an irresistible collection of woolen knitwear, hot leather attire, pretty dresses and tops and fab fitting denim jeans and more – all with a Sparkle Mode twist to them.
Sparkle Mode can be bought online at sparklemode.com and at the Sparkle Mode store at 22 Drury Street, Dublin 2. For more information, mail [email protected] or contact Nicky during business hours at 087 3194940.
