Molly Cantwell meets members of the University’s Dance UL society to hear how their involvement has enhanced their college experience.
One of the most active societies in the University of Limerick, Dance UL is renowned amongst the college’s students. Teaching a range of in-person classes for all dance abilities, the society also hosts showcases, workshops, quizzes, fundraisers, and loads of bonding activities. The aim of Dance UL is to provide a fun and supportive environment, where all types of students can come together to dance.
The passion and commitment of Dance UL members and committee members has led to the success of the society. The group have taken part in the All-Ireland Dance Intervarsities year on year, ranking highly.
“I joined Dance UL in 2020 and became an Ordinary Committee Member in 2021,” says Robyn Cunneen, Vice-President of Dance UL and PhD student. “I completed my undergraduate degree in UL from 2012-16, but I couldn’t attend as many of the classes as I would have liked. The society has grown massively since then and I love being on the Dance UL committee. I plan on being as involved as I can for the remainder of my time in UL.
“Dance UL was set up by Dr Jennifer de Brún, who’s now a staff member at the Irish World Academy. At the time, I was dancing with Jennifer elsewhere, so Dance UL became known to me while I was still in secondary school. I knew I had to join if I ever ended up in UL, and I did. Dance UL has become a central part of my time in UL. I believe in balance and pursuing your hobbies, no matter what you’re doing academically or professionally.

“It adds another dimension to being a student at UL and allows you to identify with the university in a different way. Every semester I look forward to what Dance UL will add to my college experience.”
Niamh Murray, an OCM on the committee and a second-year student, notes how many friends she’s made in the society.
“By joining Dance UL, I’ve been given countless opportunities to meet new people,” she beams. “Every class is a collection of possible friends and an opportunity to meet people who share common passions and interests. As the semesters progressed, I looked forward to seeing certain people at classes.”
The second year’s favourite thing about Dance UL is the feelgood atmosphere.

“It sounds so corny, but everyone gets so hyped in classes and the satisfied smiles really get to me. There are so many good vibes all round. You can tell that people are enjoying themselves and that’s what’s most important.”
“It’s been so amazing to be a part of such a big family in UL,” Alana Carney, Dance UL President and fourth year student adds. “The atmosphere of the society is so enjoyable. I genuinely look forward to our committee meetings every week, and as for the classes, they’re the highlight. It really gives us a sense of purpose and a break from the stresses of college, we are just one big family.”
As someone just released from the terrifying grip of first year, Niamh jumps at the opportunity to give advice to first years starting out with clubs and socs.
“Just go for it,” she enthuses. “You’ll never know unless you try, and club and socs are a great way to meet people with similar interests and hobbies. Don’t be afraid to venture outside of what you’ve done before. There’s no rulebook. It can be daunting, but the people already involved are honestly excited that you’re engaging in what they love. You got this!”
