Pavel Barter delivers his take on the new wireless speakers from Sonos.
Sonos Era 300 / Era 100 speakers
Sonos is the Oasis to Blur’s Bose (or vice versa, depending on which side of the fence you sit when it comes to Britpop debates). Either way, Sonos is reputed for spewing forth the best home sound systems on the market. Now it’s unleashing two new wireless smart speakers on your ear-holes.
The Era 300 is the larger (and more expensive at €499) of the two. This hourglass-shaped boom-box is the first Sonos speaker to contain Dolby Atmos. For non-audiophiles in the audience, Dolby Atmos is surround-sound technology first developed for cinema before making its way to home speakers. Whether the Era 300 delivers cinematic levels of magic, when you’re pumping Imagine Dragons into your cranium, remains to be seen.
The Era 100 (€279) is a stereo speaker all by itself, but can be twinned with another Era for added oomph. Both Era 300 and 100 connect via WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, Airplay, Spotify and voice assistants.
