Loganair have started flying from Belfast and Dublin to Carlisle Lake District Airport, which is back in full commercial aviation mode for the first time in 26 years.

Passengers will make the short hop over the Irish Sea in a 33-seat Saab 340B, which is the closest most of us will have come to being on a private jet.

As well as the Lake District, it’s the gateway to the Pennines, South West Scotland and the Border regions. Return fares start at around €80. carlisleairport.co.uk.

Hot Travel is tempted to give the lakes a miss and catch the mighty Carlisle United at Brunton Park instead.

There’s more good news for northern adventurers with EasyJet commencing Belfast International-Marrakesh flights on October 30.
