Musicians and artists may struggle to get back to their best after lockdown. The good news is that there is a solution, says Dr. Veronica Downes
Dr. Veronica Downes is a Wellbeing Physician and Fascia Restoration and Regeneration expert. She has been studying how to work with subtle connective tissue problems for over 20 years. Now she is deploying the insights gained in revolutionary new ways, to help musicians.
“My deep work has taught me a lot about the finer layers of the body matrix,” Veronica explains. “There is massive work going on, around the world, in the arena of studying connective tissue, but that is mostly in the sports area. Using it in relation to music performance is well ahead of the medical paradigm curve.”
Dr. Downes has started to work with musicians, with the goal of benefitting their performance, physically, psychologically and creatively.
“In the 70s, Marc Bolan sang a song called ‘Soul of My Suit’,” she recalls. “What he may not have known was that he was right over the target of a very real and potentially vital concept – which is your ‘soul suit’.”
Why ‘soul suit’? This new discipline begins with the realisation of just how vital our body tissue is, and how extensive.
“It’s in every millimetre of your body,” Dr. Downes points out. “It’s under your skin, like a kind of internal wetsuit, wrapping around all your muscles, joints, bones, nerves, and brain, etc. At the foundational level, it does a lot of hidden, everyday work. At the ‘high function’ level, it does truly amazing things, to give real-world expression to your talents and skills. It does this by linking and syncing with your being, your muscles and your joints.”
Needless to say, over time, that connective tissue matrix (the ‘soul suit’) can get snagged, blocked and worn down, leaving you frustrated, low or anxious. That wear and tear – both physical and psychic – is why many people, musicians and performers among them, feel that they are living below their potential.
“Your music or performance will benefit from specific tissue refurbishment,” she says. “To take one obvious example, working effectively on your arms and hands can enable you to play more fluidly, write more powerfully, and make you more capable of winning and wowing your audience.”
What’s more, Dr. Downes says, the change in your playing is apparent within minutes! What, was they say, is not to like?

Testimonials
Phil Cahill
Guitarist and singer-songwriter
“Initially parts of the guitar were troublesome for me, as I found parts of the guitar neck difficult to wrap my head around and had a mental and physical block while playing or writing. Within minutes Veronica had found the block at my shoulder blade – and I was off! The music just flowed. My only general session really changed my confidence and security in my performance. Things went up a level for sure.”
Hughie Kennedy
Accordionist and YouTuber
“As a constantly gigging musician (before lockdown), I expect a lot of myself. If I am no longer completely happy with my playing, then I can get back to my previous level with one or two restoring treatments. It makes all the difference.”
Caitriona Kenny
Photographer and songwriter
“I play piano and write songs. If I have a treatment session with Veronica, the drive to play and create songs is intense in me. Everything becomes easier. Afterwards, I feel so much more fired up and on beam with my creativity.”
