It’s all about rave culture and glam rock on the catwalks this spring as the Bad Girls aesthetic comes into vogue. By Roe McDermott
Want to know the quickest path to the cool kids’ table this spring? The answer is more-is-more maximalism and a DGAF attitude. The Bad Girls aesthetic is getting ready to clash with the floral romanticism of the season, and the only rule to this look is that it’s worn with the confidence of a young, wild, free spirit.
This cooler-than-thou trend was all over the catwalks, and every designer had a unique interpretation. Baja East embraced some louche tropical vibes, combining slouchy tropical prints with thick headbands and sports socks. Marc Jacobs went for ensembles that combined glam rock and rave culture.
His sequined blazers and metallic trousers were embellished with luxurious statement embroidery and paired with elaborately ruffled blouses. Coach’s rockabilly rebels combined elements of rock chic and romantic, as oversized and distressed leather vests were paired with transparent lace and floral prints. Dozens of badges and studs added to the edginess of this look.
This style essentially allows free reign, but to take inspiration from the catwalk, combine elements of grunge, rock chic, glam rock and rave. Slouchy sequins keep the vibe chill and more Studio 64 than Krystle. Look for relaxed pants or even jeans with sequinned patches for an effortlessly fabulous look that mixes casual with couture.
Feel free to clash fabrics by pairing distressed band tees, metallic blazers and sheer skirts for an outfit that screams, “I rolled around in my wardrobe, these pieces stuck to me and I look like a goddamn badass.” Nothing says carefree and edgy more than oversized denim and leather jackets.
For leather, be sure to individualise them with retro pins, badges and patches, while painted denim jackets are all the rage. Try it yourself on a vintage denim jacket for a truly personal and individual piece! Have a few friends over to create a veritable uniform of Girl Gang realness.
Corset belts and vests are always sexy but are also incredibly versatile. Wear a strappy bralette under a metallic blazer for a hint of sensuality, or throw a lace-up corset belt over a vintage tee for a Courtney Love-esque journey into grungy sex appeal.
When it comes to accessories, look for holographic backpacks and big platform books so you can stomp your way down the street like a girl boss.
