For a TV presenter and sometime model, Channel 6’s Michelle Doherty is surprisingly laid-back about fashion.
"I’m the worst person you could pick to talk to about style,” laughs Channel 6 IT gal Michelle Doherty. “I’m very plain Jane to be honest! I just wear what suits me, I don’t wear fashionable clothes so I can say ‘Oh, this is the new label.’ I just like whatever I feel most comfortable in.”
Michelle is known for presenting the Night Shift music video programme on Channel 6, but that’s just one job in her busy schedule. She also works as an air hostess and while she’s a bit busy for it nowadays, she used to do the odd modelling job too.
But far from being born out of a love of fashion, it seems modelling was just another job she fell into.
“Talk about being dropped in the deep end! I didn’t even think I’d be able to do modelling, and then I was asked to, so I thought I may as well make the most of it while I can.”
Despite working in jobs where presentation is everything, Michelle says she spends very little time worrying about what to wear.
“Well, A-Wear supply my clothes for TV, so I don’t have to worry about that," she admits. "I live in jeans basically, but if I’m asked to go to some event I will make an effort I suppose.”
Casual comfort is her real aim, Michelle says, and she’s not big on fancy clothes.
“I suppose my favourite item of clothing is my jeans,” she laughs. “Am I allowed to say that? That’s what I live in, mostly.”
And although Michelle says she’s not into labels, she’s not averse to the odd splurge. Her favourite jeans, even, come from pricey L.A. boutique Frankie B.
And then of course there’s many women’s weakness – shoes. Yes, even someone as resolutely unfashionable as Ms. Doherty can fall victim to expensive footwear.
“Oh, don’t talk to me!” she cries when the subject is raised. “I’m a disaster with shoes, I love them. My pride and joy are my Christian Louboutin ones that I got last year. I decided to treat myself and I love them. They were about €500, but I’ve never actually spent that much money on shoes before so I thought, ‘Oh to hell with it, I think I deserve it.’”
But she’s quick to point out that these big spends are the exception to the rule, and she does most of her shopping in Topshop, A-Wear, and River Island.
And when she’s forced to dress up?
“If I’m looking for something kinda cool for a big night out or something then I go to Chica in the Westbury Mall or Lara on Dame Lane. I’m going through my little dress phase as well, I love little dresses. They’re so easy ‘cause you just throw them on and you don’t even have to think about it.”
She’s hardly a dedicated follower of fashion, but Michelle does admire some more casual style icons.
“I think Kate Moss is the business, she’s the coolest. She dresses casually as well, and that’s what it’s all about; just wearing what suits you.”
