We invited a 100-strong chorus of artists, writers, musicians, broadcasters, sports stars and more to contribute to Now We’re Talking, a mental health campaign, run in partnership with Lyons Tea and Pieta House. Arborist's Mark McCambridge talks about the struggles of musicians in relation to mental health.
According to a Help Musicians UK study in 2016, musicians are three times more likely to suffer from mental health issues, than other professions. There is no doubt the uncertainty and unreliability of a career in the arts – and under the ubiquitous ear of the discerning listener – can easily lead to instability; and that this lack of ballast is a breeding ground for mental health issues. It is vital that support services are available within the industry and, most importantly, that they are visible and pro-active. The flip-side is music’s ability to act as a remedy and to keep the illness from developing at all. With the right support, this kind of magic can blossom.
100 Voices was published in the Hot Press Mental Health Special in conjunction with Lyons Tea and Pieta House as part of the Now We're Talking Campaign. For more please visit hotpress.com/now-were-talking/
