A legendary figure from New York’s ‘70s disco scene pays Dublin a visit this fortnight. And other stories...
A true godfather of dance music touches down in Dublin for a unique night of music and film Saturday, October 1. Nicky Siano, resident at the legendary ‘70s New York disco Studio 54, is showcasing Love Is The Message – A Night At The Gallery Party 1977. The film documents the hedonistic peak of disco at Nicky’s other famous residency, The Gallery and includes rare unseen footage of the club at full throttle. There will also be a Q&A session with the great man – now nearing 60. The movie is being screened in Block T, Smithfield before the whole thing moves to the Grand Social where he’ll play a four-hour set of disco classics.
“It’s a privilege to have a living legend playing for us,” says Dave Redmond of promoter Nightflight, “and it’s extra special that the documentary is ready for screening. It’s something he’s talked to us about before. Because he’s such an interesting character we thought it would be great to have a Q&A with him. He has accomplished so much – from hosting Grace Jones’ first show at The Gallery, to the debauchery of Studio 54.” For more details, check night-flight-music.com.
Two hardened veterans of the Irish scene have teamed up for a slice of high quality dubbed-out techno. Heralded by He’s Electric as the best electronica label in Ireland, Psychonavigation Records is 11 years old this month. “It’s been a crazy journey since 2000,” admits label founder Keith Downey. “I still can’t believe I’ve managed to keep the label going for so long on such a shoestring budget. I take my hat off to everyone who’s helped us over the years.” Timing perfectly with their birthday is their release of an excellent debut album by new signing CutTooth. Elements joins the dots between electronica, folk, 8-Bit and the gloomy beauty of Burial and will be out late September, for more details check psychonavigation.com.
