News and gossip from the domestic front with Roisin Dwyer
It seems much work went into the excellent new single from Gavin Glass. ‘Just Like Rome’ hits the streets on April 23 and is a mouth-watering taster for forthcoming long-player, Myna Birds (out May 28).
The B-side is Gavin’s version of The Faces classic ‘Ooh La La’, as featured in the Meteor television ad campaign.
Glass has spent the last two years working and performing with Lisa Hannigan as a multi-instrumentalist. The forthcoming release was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee during a break from Lisa’s recent North American tour.
The LP features a star-studded cast of guest musicians including Audley Freed (Black Crowes), Ken Coomer (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo) and Jen Gunderman (Jayhawks).

On another Americana-tinged note, O Emperor’s first major label release since signing to Universal Music Ireland is out now. The four-track Reverie EP includes ‘Don’t Mind Me’, which has been mixed by John O’Mahony of Coldplay and Kaiser Chiefs fame.
The band hit the road throughout May in support of the EP (check hotpress.com for details). Their debut album is scheduled for a September unveiling!
Kildare’s Anthony Furey And The Young Folk recently unleashed debut album I’ve Been Here Before in Whelan's. Over the years, the band have brought their infectious brand of rootsy Americana to the stage supporting Mark Geary, Brendan O’Shea and Minus Circus. Catch them live in The Lantern, Navan (April 30) or at the Vantastival Festival in Louth (May 2)...
Also on the Vantastival bill are Navan’s The Whatmans who have unleashed excellent debut single ‘Devil Shoes’.
The Meath boys are currently finishing their debut album as well as gearing up for some festival action over the summer which will see them visit Loving Life, Sligo (July 1); The Shamrock Music Festival, Cavan (2); and pop over to the UK for the BOM festival, Barnsley (July 17) where they’re sharing the stage with such legendary outfits as New Model Army and Hawkwind...
Dublin’s The Riptide Movement are in the middle of recording their second album, Hot Tramp, in Grouse Lodge, County Westmeath. The guys spent January on the road in France and since then have been toiling away in the studio.
The summer will see them back in action on the road at home and abroad, including a pitstop at the Indiependance Festival. Further afield they’ve been booked for the Bonaroo Festival in Tenessee and two festivals in Norway and Denmark. A German tour is also on the cards.
Following hot on the heels of the lauded ‘Hard To Explain’ come two new singles. ‘Thieves In The Gallery’ is out in June, with ‘Hot Tramp’ following in September before the album in October. Lots to look forward to!...
Birr-native Roesy is back with his fifth studio album Fable. Having received much praise for predecessor Colour Me Colourful and muchos airplay with the hit single ‘One Of The Same’ it seems he has struck gold again. The latest opus was recorded in Amsterdam and mixed in New York. Get you mitts on a copy ASAP!
The Plea’s exquisite debut single ‘Nothin’ But Trouble’ is out now.
Impressively, the Donegal outfit were signed to Belgian label R&S Records late 2009 by Renatt Vandepapeliere (the man who discovered Aphex Twin). The act feature in the brand new RTE 2FM radio and TV campaign. Watch this space!
