Afghan Whigs are back with their first studio album in five years, 'How Do You Know?' and a newly released single, "The Getaway."
In an unfortunately fortunate turn of events, the pandemic forced Afghan Whigs’ frontman Greg Dulli to cancel his solo tour in 2020, remain in California and instead focus on the creation of the imminent How Do You Burn?, the Whigs’ first studio album in five years.
Since reuniting in 2012, the band has released two very well-received records, Do to the Beast (2014) and In Spades (2017), with How Do You Burn? marking the ensemble’s ninth official album.
The Whigs gave us a taste of their forthcoming sound today with the first single from their record, ‘The Getaway,’ released along with a music video. The band heads out on their spring tour next week, kicking off in Florida, and have released dates for their following tour later this year through the U.S. and Europe.
Afghan Whigs’ fall tour starts in Minneapolis on the day of How Do You Burn?’s release, September 9. They will work their way to London for the tour’s final date, November 6. Ticket sales for all shows go live this Friday, May 6.
Dulli hunkered down throughout the pandemic to build the record, working with co-producer Christopher Thorn, and drummer Patrick Keeler. Bassist John Curley, guitarist Jon Skibic and strings player Rick Nelson worked on their respective engineering and parts from across the states.

Collaborations feature the late Mark Lanegan on backup vocals, who Dulli shares in the band’s press release, “named the album.” Susan Marshall returns to provide vocals on ‘Catch A Colt,” a track on the record which is anticipated to become a standout with elements of Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk. Other collaborators list producer Van Hunt and Marcy Mays with her haunting, expressive vocal power.
The album is likely to be even more expansive in genre than the Whig’s previous discography, as press release statements hint at notes of “voodoo-blues” and “feral gospel.”
How Do You Know? will be released on September 9 and is available for pre-order now. Check out The Whigs’ fall tour dates, available for purchase this Friday, and don’t forget to listen to the new Afghan Whigs single, ‘The Getaway.”
