Album Review: Aoife Nessa Frances – 'Land of No Junction'

‘Geranium’, the opening track on Aoife Nessa Frances’ debut album, begins with a digital beat. It seems offhand and carefree almost, but joined by Frances’ willowy voice, it quickly becomes evident that Land of No Junction has a very serious purpose.

Stream-of-consciousness stories that hazard a sincere commentary on love, loss, and femininity are woven together around strings and synths, digital and analog. The soundscape feels vast, evoking a no-man’s land wherein Frances attempts to find herself.

The songs on the album were written over several years, largely using a free-writing method. The effect is that the tracks sometimes lack individuality. On occasion, it can seem behind the curve too: breakout single ‘Blow Up’ deals with the 2018 Repeal referendum. But Frances covers a lot of ground and her delicate and dulcet vocals are appealing. File under: ‘One to watch’.
