Irish instrumentalists show us their horns
If you’re one of the few people left in the country yet to encounter Booka Brass via-their formidable live show, then, to borrow a phrase from ‘90s one hit wonders Mousse T, the band are best described as horny....horny, horny, horny. Forming in 2012, the classically trained tunesmiths cut their musical teeth collaborating with the likes of The Frames and Lisa Hannigan while regularly stealing the show on the festival circuit and now they aim to take things up another level with their debut album.
Comprising of ten tracks (nine originals and a cover of Jason Derulo’s ‘Talk Dirty’), the opus is a fun fusion of pop, hip hop, easy listening and jazz, all performed impeccably. Though it is a little front-loaded, Chilled Milk is still a tasty serving of brass-based, New Orleans-style goodness. Highlights include the swaggering ‘Trip The Switch,’ the reggae informed title-track, and the hugely enjoyable ‘Trombolo,’ which boasts an impressive percussion solo.
