Excellent collection from alt-pop merchant - 8/10. Review by Ailsha Davey.
When Charles Costa, previously known as King Charles, announced the release of his self-titled debut, it was uncertain what direction he would take. Having spent the past decade dealing with the aftermath of a skiing accident that left him with brain trauma, Costa has certainly had his share of challenges.
Created over six weeks in a studio located in a former US Air Force Base in Suffolk, Charles Costa boasts a unique sound, blending elements of ‘80s electro-pop with pastoral folk.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, given Costa’s back story, the main lyrical focus of the album is vulnerability. A particular standout is ‘Nothing At The Most’, a captivating chamber-pop ballad. Notably, Costa – inspired by his own experience with trauma – has aspired to support others facing mental health struggles, recently raising over £165k for suicide prevention charity James’ Place.
Fittingly, this impressive record reflects both the musician’s personal experience and his empathy for others, serving as a testament to finding beauty in struggle.
