Powerful debut from the Irish TikTok sensation
If you haven’t heard Cian Ducrot’s name yet, you’ve been burying your head in the sand. The Cork man made a name for himself on TikTok over lockdown, living and collaborating with another rising singer-songwriter, Cate Canning. From there, his career exploded, as he headed out on tour with the likes of Ella Henderson, Ed Sheeran, and most recently, Dermot Kennedy.
A social media whizz, he has grabbed the attention of thousands, with even American TV’s Today Show becoming enamoured with his flash-mob choir performances, teasing singles from his debut offering. And now it has finally arrived! The French/Irish singer commences his debut with the title track, boasting lyrics that pack a punch.
Ducrot dives deep into his family background with ‘Step Dad’ and ‘Mama’, two poignant, tear-jerking tracks. In particular, the former’s lyrics (“I know I’m not a part of you, but what’s blood?”) cut really deep.‘Hurt When You Hurt Me’ and ‘Blame It On You’ are smooth piano ballads, while ‘Endless Night’ and ‘Part Of Me’ could be easily mistaken – in a good way – for tour-mate Kennedy.
Elsewhere, closer ‘Thank God You Stayed’ is undeniably the rawest offering. The lullaby-like backing is complemented by gritty vocals and beautiful riffs, the whole song throbbing with emotion.
In the future, I'd like to see Ducrot varying his line of attack more. But here, he has opened up a clear path into Irish charts and hearts. A victory indeed.
