The Australian singer disappoints with her Christmas album, which was released on November 17.
Sia has always been a workhorse. A get ‘em out fast kind of musician. Continuing the trend, she’s put her marketing hat on and made a bunch of Christmas songs for the festive countdown.
On first listen, it’s quick to pick up on the repetitiveness of the songs. ‘Snowman’ - a love letter to a melting beau - covers the same topic as similarly titled ‘Snowflake’ . Its thoughtlessness almost veers toward laziness. Fused with SIA’s samey squalls and oddly placed Scandinavian accent, Everyday is Christmas seems more like a money-spinner than a ‘from the bottom of my heart’ type deal.
Speaking with music outlet, Hypster, Sia doesn’t give the album much promise either. “It’s not like you have to have an original idea to begin with...It’s like, Christmas, mistletoe, ho-ho-ho, Santa Claus, Christmas list, elves”, she said.
Bar two ballads, ‘Underneath The Mistletoe’ and ‘Underneath the Christmas Lights’, the other tracks are energetic and cheery - but by no means are they merry and festive. No tickling of the glockenspiel. No ringing of sleigh bells. One would have expected to hear something along the lines of Bjork’s 'Oh So Quiet', which featured in a 2009 Sky Christmas advert. Listeners are instead treated with a medley of nondescript, SIA factory setting songs. Not her best album release.
