Impressive second outing from limerick rockers
If you’re a fan of The National and Matt Berninger’s deep drawl, you’ll probably find much to admire in Protobaby’s moody electro-rock. Cosmic Heart is the follow-up to their acclaimed debut The Spark: it sees the Limerick natives return to their original line-up, with frontman Colm McGuinness and his signature brooding baritone back on board.
Opener ‘Fractions Of Dark’ is arguably the standout moment. Haunting, hymn-like vocals are set against an ominous guitar track, but the subtext is one of religious disenchantment, emphasised by lyrics like “Out of our fear they gain control.” The juxtaposition of a haunting melody with electro-fuzz and screeching synths sets the tone for the rest of the album.
‘Questions + Doubts’ is another, somewhat macabre highlight: its poetic lyrics and hair-raising beats add up to a menacing soundscape that wouldn’t be out of place in a horror movie. ‘Revolution Wanted’ and ‘Charity’ are both indie anthems with the potential to fill stadiums. The all-acoustic ‘End Of The Day’, is disappointingly tame compared to the rest of the material. However, on lead single ‘Popstars’, Protobaby confirm that they have the ability to infiltrate the mainstream.
All in all, the off-beat combination of jarring electro-rock and soaring vocals provides ample flesh to sink your teeth into. Cosmic Heart is a meaty listen.
