Album Review: Muddy Magnolias, Broken People
Head downstream on a thick golden river of honey. Jessy Wilson and Kallie North captain the raft of a smooth and sexy debut album.
Growing from Mississippi Delta roots, Muddy Magnolias deliver an 11-track dessert filled with sweet layers of blues, rock, and soulful harmonies. The band truly absorbs the rich musical diversity of the South and connects the many styles that seemingly would not intermingle.
Whether inspired by New Orleans funk or the likes of the Grateful Dead, each song conveys deep emotion sprung from the human condition. ‘Brother, What Happened?’ consists of a conversation between Jessy and Kallie, united by the chorus “What happened to this world?” The soul and rock vibes call attention to personal and political issues.
‘Shine On’ begins slow with Jessy’s sole voice and a steady bass line – reminiscent of the 90s rock song ‘Black Velvet.’ One minute in, Kallie joins and lifts the song higher. True throughout the album, the two vocally support each other like the ebb and flow of tides. The story becomes a candle sparked by hope as the two promise to ‘keep the light on’ and carry on despite a broken heart.
There are also more playful numbers that require your dancing shoes. ‘Devil’s Teeth’ features an upbeat clapping rhythm and catchy chorus that reminds one of a jubilant church choir. Not once does the duo overpower one another. Cohesive harmonies define the lyrics, even when John Legend features in the final track ‘Leave It To The Sky.’ A pleasing triple layer crescendo caps off the album.
