Patchy effort from highly touted R&B star
This has already been a massive year for the Young Turks label. Hot on the heels of the release of I See You by The xx, the label presents the debut album from Sampha Sisay, who has previously made a name for himself through working with SBTKRT, Solange Knowles and Kanye West.
Process is certainly a beautifully assembled and produced debut. ‘Blood on Me’ is a terrific lead single, well worth checking out for its striking video alone. The rest of Process features some fine moments, but nothing rivals that delicious high.
Sisay has a great voice – and ‘(No One Knows Me) Like the Piano’ is a minimal and quietly majestic track, reminiscent of a meditative and more low-key James Blake. However, if Sampha is to eventually become as good as Blake, or his illustrious label mates, his ideas need to be fleshed out more.
In sum, Process is a highly promising debut featuring a single that could be in the shake-up for best tune of 2017 come December.
