Album Review: The Avalanches, Wildflower
Landslide of fun from missing-in-action sample gurus
Has it really been 16 years since The Avalanches cut'n'paste masterpiece Since I Left You? This would indeed appear to be the case, proving that (A) we're all getting really old (well, I am) and (B) absence truly does make the heart grow fonder.
Back from their decade-and-a-half hiatus Melbourne duo Tony Di Blasi and Robbie Chater essentially carry on where they left off with their wistful mash-up pop, much of it now featuring the hush-now-forest-child vocals of Mercury Rev's Jonathan Donahue.
There are, it is true, several clunkers, most notably single 'Frankie Sinatra'. Deeper in though, it all gets woozy and wonderful, with the Donahue-assisted 'Harmony' achieving a shimmering state of grace and 'Park Music' blending doo-wop and EDM and somehow making you glad you're alive.
Wildflower is out now!
