Album Review: The Guzzlers, Drinking The Dream
Pub-shanties with plenty of punch. 7/10
Folk-punk pub-shanty duo The Guzzlers comprises Limerick brothers Tom and Cian O’Dowd. The Shannonsiders traded the Treaty County for Liverpool in 2025 and have since become resident performers at Anfield Stadium.
Their debut album, Drinking The Dream, does exactly that. Opener ‘20 Pints To Cherbourg’ recounts their time playing ferry gigs – and losing one after a few too many pints. In true shanty style, the duo immortalises the misadventure with lively banjo, strummed guitar and a dose of self-deprecation.
Tracks like ‘The Drunken Tales Of Gerry MacLean’ and ‘A Pint Of Plain Is Your Only Man’ also celebrate their enduring love for a drink. Bodhrán-driven, foot-stomping rhythms, and nimble string work complement their gravelly vocals, lending the record the rowdy feel of a late-night lock-in.
‘Killarney’ shifts gears, swapping bad decisions and misadventures for a love song of sorts. Every track brims with character, with even gentler moments like ‘Grief’ retaining the warmth, heart and harmonies that define the record. Overall, Drinking The Dream’s infectious energy makes for a spirited debut.
7/10
