Speaking exclusively to Hot Press, Alphastates have explained why they are breaking up, playing their very last gig with Herm and The DC Experiment at Whelan's on February 18...
“We're calling it a day because we've always loved making music and had lots of fun being in Alphastates, but we're all being pulled in different directions now. Catherine Dowling had a baby girl called Rachel and is having lots of fun in the world of little people now. She's currently working on a solo record which is hoping to make an appearance before the end of the year. It’s something she's wanted to do for a while but lacked the confidence. Having a baby has changed that. Most of the songs were written while pregnant and an insomniac. She's working on it with her creative partner from Alphastates Gerry Horan. She's also been asked to write songs for films.
Gerry is writing soundtracks for various films and documentaries on a very regular basis. It’s where his big passions lie.
Stevie Kavanagh is a member of the Rags.
The breaks didn't really happen but that's not the reason why we were in Alphastates. We wanted to make great music. We all need to express ourselves through our music and were always passionate about what we did. In the end, we didn't feel so passionate and felt it only fair and right to send the angel to bed.

Hope this explains somewhat. ...Thanks for being so supportive of our music.”
