It marks Richard D. James’ first new music as Aphex Twin in five years
Limerick-born electronic artist Aphex Twin has announced his new EP, Blackbox Life Recorder 21f (out June 28th) using an augmented reality app and interactive art.
Audience members at his live performances are invited to scan a QR code that leads to an app called YXBoZXh0d2lu, available on both Apple and Google Play From there, fans can visit Aphex Twin's merch store and the website for his record label, Warp Records.
The new EP features four tracks, and will be his first release since Collapse in 2018. The title track was briefly up on the artist's Soundcloud today, but has since been removed. It is now available on Deezer, as is the list of the other tracks on the EP.
Cornwall-raised DJ and composer Aphex Twin is known for his unconventional promotion campaigns and releases. In the mid-2000s he released work under the aliases the Tuss and AFX, and 2014 saw him release a never before heard 1994 LP as Caustic Window.
In 2015 he began releasing old tracks and demos through a variety of URLs on Soundcloud. Despite the unidentifiable account name, User18081971, and renegade nature of his anonymous demo releases, the account is now definitively associated with the artist.
