"We had like three different versions of the song... There’s a version where I was getting married, there’s a version where I’m not getting married, there’s a version with nothing."
Without a doubt 'thank u, next' is a smash hit. With over 302 million views on YouTube, it's hard to believe the single we all know and love could have been a completely different song.
Ariana Grande revealed “We had like three different versions of the song,” during an interview on the Zach Sang Show.
'thank u, next' was recorded during a turbulent time during Grande's relationship with SNL comedian Pete Davidson. The two were "up and down and on and off" throughout their engagement. With that Grande had to prepare in case she broke off the engagement or married Davidson.
"I had to make a different version of it, and then we broke up again, so we ended up going with that verse,” Grande explained. “There’s a version where I was getting married, there’s a version where I’m not getting married, there’s a version with nothing. We’re not talking about anything, but we all knew that the first version was gonna be the version we ultimately went with."
The singer credits her music as her main source of therapy as it helps her get through challenging times.

Grande discussed how the final version of 'thank u, next' impacted the decision to break off the engagement, adding "we closed that chapter" once it was written down in a song.
