The original version of 'Last Christmas' by Wham! is a melancholy '80s bop, with the voices of voices of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley equally capturing both heartbreak and hope.
Rising London musician Arlo Parks has put a completely unique spin on the '80s Wham! classic 'Last Christmas' for Apple Music's Christmas singles series.
Instead of leaning into the track’s nostalgic energy, the poet-turned-musician turns it on its head and delivers the track with a smooth and supple tenderness.
The 1986 song is reimagined as a minimal, soulful number, with Parks' creativity allowing her to make 'Last Christmas' sound like she'd written the original version herself.
Bedroom pop artist Beabadoobee, meanwhile, offered up an equally charming version of the 1939 yuletide staple ‘Winter Wonderland’ for her cover, with James Blake choosing 'In the Bleak Midwinter' to deliver.
