While some of Slam’s ideas have been off the mark – Prince pastisches, anyone? – ‘Human Response’ sees them back doing what they do best, reinterpreting the deep US techno that dominated their 1996 debut album, Headstates. ‘Weekday Mourning’ and ‘Looking North’ are beautiful, introspective arrangements and Stuart and Orde sound off the mark when they try to emulate current trends, like the lame grinding electro house of ‘Staccato Rave’. It won’t break down any barriers or start a revolution, but ‘Human Response’ is a pleasant enough way to spend 70-odd minutes.
