The explicit track is less ‘little mermaid’ and more ‘marine queen’
Rapper-singer-songwriter extraordinaire Azealia Banks dropped a new single over the weekend while revealing Fantasea II is on its merry way.
Banks is praised for making the type of music that forms a perfect soundtrack for vogueing - a specific type of dance invented by black gay men and frequently used in drag performance - as demonstrated by previous single 'Anna Wintour'.
'Treasure Island' doesn't disappoint in this regard either, only it brings vogueing under the sea.
Between lyrics referencing the sea theme, sultry vocals that could easily pose as a mermaid's call and water droplet sounds over the chorus, the self-proclaimed "Lady Lagoon" has produced the perfect beach party banger.
Banks has previously used oceanic imagery with album Fantasea sporting a cartoon mermaid on the cover.

She also revealed ‘Treasure Island’ will be getting a music video, and we wonder if it’ll contain a mermaid rival to that of Nicki Minaj’s ‘Bed’ music video (which Banks referred to as “chicken of the sea”).
Either way, clicking play on ‘Treasure Island’ feels like opening up a treasure chest to everything that glimmers, glitters and glows.
