Turgid hip-hop from tired veteran
Sounding every day of his 37 years Busta hasn’t exactly been firing on all cylinders for the last decade. Seemingly content to churn out turgid, unimaginative dross that only detracts from his legacy, Back On My B.S. relies far too much on all-star collaborations instead of his own rhymes.
Arriving on shelves 18 months behind schedule, the record is a disappointing, hook-free affair. Opener ‘Wheel Of Fortune’ starts well, but the Lil’ Wayne assisted ‘Respect For My Conglomerate’ and total non-starter ‘Give ‘Em What They Askin’ For’ leave us in no doubt that Busta has little of note left in the musical bank. Not even Neptunes-produced ‘Kill Dem’ can save this record and the contributions by Estelle on recent single ‘World Go Round’ (which samples the Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams’) is scandalously buried in the mix.
However, what’s most disappointing about Back On My B.S. is that it shows Busta to be a one trick pony, who’s seriously out of touch with his listeners. It looks like it’s time to put the rapper out to pasture.
