News and gossip from the domestic front with Roisin Dwyer
Any band who name their album after a JG Ballard short story are definitely worth investigating. The opus in question, The Sound Sleep, by Newbridge’s Band On An Island is a real aural treat. The album was recorded and produced by Sean Corcoran and features collaborations with Jinx Lennon and The Mighty Stef, whose label, The Firstborn Is Dead Recordings, release the gem on November 6.
The Kildare troupe joined forces in 2003 and since then have released debut EP The Burning Shoulder, toured extensively in the States and supported such luminaries as Damien Dempsey, Republic Of Loose, Donal Lunny and Andy Irvine. They even shared the stage with Shaun Ryder!
Catch them live warming up the crowd for Super Extra Bonus Party in The Academy on November 13……

Here’s a blast from the past…….Having spent the last year and a half writing and recording, Dubliners Channel One are ready to unleash the fruits of their labour, longplayer Sound To Light, in The Button Factory on November 6. The new tunes have already received enthusiastic receptions at Castlepalooza and this year’s DEAF Fundraiser in August. Admission to the album launch is FREE!!
Since the release of debut album Busy Whisper in July, Sligo’s Pearse McGloughlin aka Walkperson has been busy on the gig circuit and most recently wowed the crowds at Hard Working Class Heroes. If you haven’t managed to catch the live experience then the place to be is upstairs in Whelans on October 29, guest on the evening is Fia Rua.
If you haven’t already heard Pearse his dreamy, atmospheric nuggets have drawn comparisons with Red House Painters and their ilk. The LP was recorded and mixed by Andy Knightley and two songs were recorded and mixed by Karl Odlum. His ‘Desired Effect’ EP got Jackie Hayden’s Pick Of The Fortnight earlier this year.
Dublin blues rockers The Riptide Movement release ‘Alive Inside’, the third single from their excellent debut album What About The Tip Jars on November 6 in Crawdaddy. The band have support slots to The Blizzards, Taste and James Yuill and two sold-out headline shows at the Village under their belts — and, impressively, TV3 used their music to soundtrack Gaelic football and hurling broadcasts. Ones to keep an eye on!
