Non-profit organisation Duisigh will use music to raise awareness and money for the victims of the horrific Chernobyl disaster that happened 20 years ago.
Duisigh events aim to educate Ireland about the struggle of the people of Belarus since the tragedy.
On April 26, 1986, an explosion at a nuclear plant in Ukraine released almost 200 tons of radioactive substances into the atmosphere. The cloud of terror travelled north to Belarus and then east over western Russia and west across Europe.
"To me Chernobyl is the forgotten cause, and the government aren't prepared to do anything about it. A lot of young people don't even know what's happened," organiser Brenda King said.
To promote awareness and to fund a a hospital in Khoiniki, 30km from the disaster site, a summer event will be held at St. Maurs GAA Club, Kenure, Rush on Friday, August 11. The gig will be headlined by Kila with the rest of the acts to be picked via a Battle Of The Bands competition.
To enter the Battle of The Bands, to be held in the Harbour Bar Rush on July 14 and 15 acts must email [email protected] with the address of their MySpace site and contact details.
The site should have band music, a biography and details of any upcoming gigs. The last day to enter is Friday June 23.
The best 12 will make it to the Battle Of The Bands, after which 2 will be selected to support Kila at the event.
