The big news of the fortnight is Greg Dowling and Shane Johnson have ended the longest running club residency in the world
They played their last sets at Sweat at Sir Henry’s on the club’s thirteenth birthday, and along with Stevie G they’re now at Go Deep, at The Savoy Theatre every Saturday. Greg and Shane were reluctant to talk about their sudden departure, except to say “it was time to move on.” The midweek club Freakscene has also left Sir Henry’s. The resident DJs issued a statement blaming their departure on the management of the venue, and hope to announce a new venue for Freakscene in the coming weeks…
A dedicated breakdancer during the ’80s, with influences ranging from London Posse to Demon Boys, former Scary Eire frontman Rì-Rà has just released his second solo single ‘Stampede’. The track features Rodney P and Major, and it’s the follow-up to last summer’s debut ‘40 Shades Of Greed’. A low-down and dirty funkster with the funkiest, phattest bassline, ‘Front Bar’ is crowned by Rì-Rà’s prominent Irish accent. Rapping about “getting tanked on a good jar”, it reflects his renowned ability to persuade even the most abstinent drinkers to head straight to the bar. The Radio Edit is provided by celebrated scratch master and Moby tour DJ Roger Johnson, and the Dub mix comes courtesy of legendary producer Adrian Sherwood…
‘Resistance’ is a new collaboration between Razor and Bass Odyssey’s GWZ set for release on Defunked next month. It’s a soulful roller with a killer vocal hook sung by Josie Doherty, and is flipped with Razor’s own ‘Keep Your Distance’ (which also features Josie). The single is already a staple in the sets of Fabio, DJ Hype, LTJ Bukem, Bryan Gee and DJ Addiction‘… Adventures of a Tragic Man’ is the first release from Dublin outfit, EN, and the first on Scott MacNaughton’s Underdog Records. The track was originally released on the Synergia compilation last summer… Dublin label.
