Dance music news with Mark Kavanagh
Wicklow-based breakbeat funksters Hybrasil [pictured] warm things up for the September release of their album, The Monkey Pole, next month with a top notch single entitled ‘God Bless The Devil’, a sublime slab of psychedelic electronica with big drums, hi-hats that hiss like a rattlesnake and infectious guitars and sitars galore.
It’s the missing link between George Harrison and Chemical Brothers, and you can check it out live when Hybrasil perform at Dublin club Backlash on June 7.
Following on from their remix of Kerri Chandler’s ‘The Promise’ earlier this year, Cork deep house duo Fish Go Deep have tweaked the knobs on a mix of Audio Soul ‘Community’, which has just been released on the top Brit house stamp, NRK. And the pair’s Ork Recordings stamp – co-owned by DK7’s Mark O’Sullivan – has just unleashed its latest EP Walkabout by Dutch duo Nick Hogendoorn and Eelke Kleijn. It will be followed by an EP from fellow Corkonian, Chymera, who is creating some of the world’s most beautiful techno at the moment. Fish Go Deep have also been busy writing new songs with vocalist Tracey K and join her for a live set at Trinity Rooms on June 3.
Another Leesider, Edwin James, has delivered a marvelous Corrugated Tunnel remix on the One Drop Does It 2007 Remixes Part One EP by David Duriez which is the ninth release from Galway-based house stamp Elevation (and out now).
There is also a Corrugated Tunnel Remix included with ‘Atmosdub’, the new single from the aforementioned Mark O’Sullivan out now on revered German imprint Harthouse. And electronic rockers Noise Control have enlisted Corrugated Tunnel to remix their debut single ‘Steel’, which hits download stores on June 8.
The Dublin five-piece will be launching it with a party at Crawdaddy on June 7, while it should also be noted that Corrugated Tunnel play live at Acii Disco The Hub (fast building a reputation as the capital’s most hedonistic Saturday night) on June 2 supported by DJ Jay Grogan.
The Cork aural assault continues in June with a new release from John Daly on his own Feel Music stamp. John’s recent outing on Swiss label Plak, ‘Sky Dive’, was a gorgeous slab of chilled percussive house that received much critical acclaim and international DJ support.
Hot on the heels of being signed to John Acquaviva’s Definitive Recordings as one half of Totally Random, Tripod resident DJ LRB sees his collaboration with long-serving Dublin producer and studio whiz Barry Dempsey (of Phunk’dup fame) hit the shops this fortnight on Christian Boshell’s Monad Recordings stamp.
Electro-house effort ‘Dishiesque’ is accompanied by mixes from Renaissance act Montero, Greek groove-master Bobby Deep and the aforementioned Totally Random.
Another new release from the Dublin label is a solo outing from Dempsey, ‘Gelyte’, which comes replete with versions from Greek producers DJ Tim & Andi Vasilos, Swedish producer Johan Chatkowski, and Dublin-based prog-house producer Tianell.
Leading UK breaks DJ Adam Freeland’s much respected Marine Parade label releases a single from multi-talented Redneck Manifesto bassist Richie Egan in his alter-ego, Jape. ‘Floating’ is the best known track released so far by Jape, who this month signed a publishing deal with Universal and a recording contract with V2 for the Ireland and the UK, and it’s out on June 18 in a superb remix package that includes treatments by Dublin act Philth and laidback European disco don Prins Thomas. And watch out this summer for Jape remixes of ones-to-watch The Teenagers and on-fire Dublin indie rockers, The Rakes.
Irish hip-hop’s frontline act Messiah J & The Expert knock out the latest single from their second album this fortnight. ‘All The Girls’ is one of the highlights from Now This I Have To Hear.
Ministry of Sound and Hed Kandi have teamed up with the Northern Media Group and launched a series of dance radio shows across the north-west and in the North every Saturday night between 11pm and 5am. The Northern Media Group network (consisting of the north-west’s Ocean FM and the North’s 5FM, 6FM, 7FM, Q97.2, Q101 and Q102) will broadcast a two-hour Hed Kandi show presented by David Dunne followed by Ministry of Sound’s Dance Party mix one-hour show, the 60-minute Ministry of Sound Session and a repeat of the previous week’s Hed Kandi set. “I am very pleased to be broadcasting across the North of Ireland with Ocean FM and the Northern Media Group stations.” said Robert Sharp, Brand Director for Ministry of Sound Ireland.
Limerick superclub Trinity Rooms is going full steam ahead with a series of six parties at Eden in Ibiza this summer, with plans to bring plane loads of Irish clubbers to each event to be unveiled in the coming weeks. See www.trinityrooms.ie for details. Meanwhile, ‘Hey Guy’, the imminent first release on its label from resident DJ Paul Webb – a top quality vocal house affair – is currently being remixed by 110th Street and Rob Wilder.
2FM’s Sessions Tour website (www.sessionstour.com) has emailed its members and informed them that they will soon be receiving news of the line-up for the new Irish dance festival. The Sessions crew is about to launch a fortnightly Saturday event at the Tivoli in Dublin. The opening party on June 30 features a superb Irish line-up of John O’Callaghan, Agnelli & Nelson and Mr Spring … THE BEAT GOES ON!
