Impressive, if occasionally derivative, offering from us alt-rock duo
The third album from California duo Best Coast sees them lean towards cleaner production and more '90s rock sound. There are times on this record where you could listening ti The Lemonheads, Weezer or even Blink 182, with the latter ttwo in particular exerting a serious influence.
Though there are few surprises, the album is still an agreeable listen. Bethany Cosentino's vocals throughout are engaging, with her harmonies recalling classic west coast rock. On guitar and completing the duo is Guitarist Bobb Bruno, who chips in with some impressive licks. Best Coast's decision to work with seasoned producer Wally Gagel (New Order, Miley Cyrus, Muse) has allowd them to expand their musical ambitions. Gagel's production allows the band to flex their musical muscles and explore different sonic terrain, but it all hangs together superbly. Indeed, the album has an eclectic and lush feel that's notably different from the band's early lo-fi records. An excellent example is the title track, where the crunchy guitars and sweet backing vocals have mesmerising effect.
Other highlights include the Pixies-ish 'In My Eyes' and the irresistibly catchy 'jealousy'. Overall, whilst it is heavily indebted to '90s alt-rock, California Nights remains a supremely well-crafted effort.
